Cognitive behavioral therapy, sometimes known as CBT, is a treatment option for many types of mental health disorders. It helps people change thought patterns and behaviors that are in conflict with how they perceive the world and themselves. There are many types of disorders that respond well to this type of therapy, including anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other emotional problems. CBT is sometimes used in conjunction with other treatment options such as therapy and medication to help improve symptoms. In some cases, it can even be used as a complementary therapy to medicine.Do you want to learn more? Visit CBT THERAPY .
When doctors use CBT to treat patients, they focus on identifying the negative thoughts and replacing them with more positive thoughts. For example, if a patient comes to therapy and complains of excessive worrying, the therapist will teach the patient to notice when he becomes anxious. He may then replace this thought – such as imagining being in a traffic jam and getting through it quickly – with another, more positive thought. Over time, the patient’s worry about traffic jam will subside, and by stopping a behavior that increases stress levels, he will begin to feel more relaxed.
Unlike some forms of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy does not require patients to take any medication. In fact, it can be performed entirely in the patient’s home. Since it is based on self-help techniques, patients feel free to explore their own minds and learn new coping mechanisms for anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Some even report an increase in personal happiness after CBT.
